When you dock in Grand Cayman be sure to join the Crystal Caves
Excursion. This guided walking excursion will let you experience the
lush jungle and caves of the island. Please note that there is a minimum
of 4 people needed to run this excursion, if this minimum
is not met the excursion may be canceled, and we will try to notify you
in advance.
You'll meet your shore excursion guide at your Grand Cayman cruise
tender terminal and be driven approximately 45 minutes to the Crystal
Caves. The site is a rather unique feature on a relatively flat
island. The caves have only recently been opened to tourism
after owners and eco-developers Christian and Ole Sorensen spent years
exploring and mapping all the caves and persuading the government to
open them to visitors. They recognized the uniqueness of these caves
previously known as Bat Caves. Do not expect some
gimmicky tourist attraction with plastic pirate items, these caves are
the real deal!
Your guided walking excursion through 3 spectacular caves located in
the lush tropical jungle is about 1.5 hours long and where you may spot a
variety of birds, agoutis, iguanas, bats, parrots, and lots of flora
including strangler balsam trees, and air
plants. Bring your camera. During 45 minutes, you'll explore the dry
caves where you'll see amazing stalactite (an icicle-shaped mineral
formation, caused by dripping water, that hangs from the ceiling of a
cave) and stalagmite (upward-growing mineral formation
formed by water dripping on the floor of the cave and building upward)
crystal structures formed over millions of years. You can also spot
fossilized shells and evidence of animal life found in the sea. The
caves were at one time under water and as the sea
levels lowered water erosion formed the caves. At one time these caves
were used by pirates to hide and shelter from fierce storms and
hurricanes.
At the end of your Grand Cayman Cave Excursion, you'll be able to
take a brief break, use the restrooms, and stop at the snack and gift
shops if you care to purchase snacks and non-alcoholic beverages.
Afterward, you'll board again your shore excursion transportation
to return to your Grand Cayman cruise ship tender terminal
